Empowering Neurodivergent Leaders to Spark Transformation and Cultivate Dream Teams

HELLO FRIENDS!

I'm Liz

And I'm right there with you.

I joke that my future TedTalk will be titled, "Confessions of a Reluctant Leader." I was considered a leader by others before I considered myself one. I had no ambitions toward leadership, but found my way, and found that I'm actually quite good at it. To the point that I was entrusted with training up-and-coming leaders, and other leaders in other organizations were meeting with me for accountability and advice.

Not bad for an ADHD geriatric Millennial, who is likely on the spectrum, as well. I want to share my secrets with you, and show you how I made my neurodivergences my superpowers, so you can too.

Besides all that, I'm a wife and mother who has been in the workforce for two decades and in leadership for more than 10 years. I'm active in my local community (I'll tell you, there's a lot of my leadership tips that go into that, as well!). And I donate 10% of my income to charitable organizations.

Liz and I have worked together many years but almost immediately saw a change. I would say within the first month I could feel myself changing.

Never feeling rushed but always feeling like we were both striving for my betterment made it easy to "make mistakes" and learn.

Being an effective communicator and leader have only aided my life. Knowing I have tools to convey thoughts and ideas to others encourages me to put myself out there professionally.

Why Green Hummingbird?

Lots of reasons, really.

My favorite color is green and hummingbirds were my grandmother’s favorite bird, so they remind me of her.  Seeing a hummingbird nearby reminds me to hope.

My daughter also has a stuffed Green Hummingbird that goes along with a book and represents love.

Since social responsibility is a company value, I like the association with being ecologically friendly (and attempt to be so as much as possible).

Of course, hummingbirds are pollinators, helping plants and flowers grow.  That is what I aim to do for the leaders with whom I work.

And since I've decided to focus on Neurodivergent folx, it felt appropriate, since the hummingbird's swiftness makes it feel like the most ADHD of the birds to me. :-)

Finally, there's this story that inspires me when I feel overwhelmed by the need.

What organizations do you support?

As someone who worked in the nonprofit industry for over a decade, I'm always looking for more ways to support valuable causes.

I currently support the organizations found on this page, with donations of 10% of my income (most are local to me, and all are small, as I know firsthand the impact and struggles of small, local nonprofits).

What is Coaching?

Coaching is a thought provoking conversation that helps a person move from where they are to where they want to be, and to navigate all of the challenges and the opportunities that appear along the way. Regular coaching provides accountability.

A coach is someone who walks alongside you while you practice this skill. A coach provides security and confidence. A coach cares, is close in proximity, and is always ready to help.

To be clear, most of my coaching follows along these lines. But some of my questions may take to form of a story of a similar situation I have heard about or experienced, with the question at the end, as I believe it is very often helpful to be able to decide what you might do in a situation when you are not IN it.

What is Leadership?

Without giving away too much for free, leadership is both about casting and communicating a vision for the future of whatever you are leading, AND about the people who look to you for guidance, support, and direction in achieving that vision.

It's a WHOLE LOT MORE than that, and a WHOLE LOT MORE goes into becoming a good leader. But as a very basic definition, I think that's a good place to start.

How is Coaching different from...

Counseling?: Counseling helps you work through stuff in your past that could be preventing you from moving forward. Coaching is about focuses on where you are now and moving you forward into the future. I am a BIG proponent of counseling/therapy, so I might suggest this to you, if I feel it will benefit you. (Please do not be offended by this... it's been so helpful to me and many I know that I do not understand the stigma against it.)

Mentoring?: Mentoring is all about the knowledge I carry in this industry, and about giving advice to the mentee. I do throw this in occasionally and do my best to warn you it's coming (I've done a lot of mentoring over the years)... but ultimately, in a coaching capacity, my belief is that you have the answers, once you've had a chance to work through ALL the questions in the situation.
